A rematch or re-battle (Japanese: 再戦 rematch) is a second or subsequent boxing against a Trainer or Pokémon.

In the cadre serial games, it is mandatory for the thespian to defeat certain Trainers to accelerate within the game. Technically, if the role player is defeated, they are given the chance to battle this opponent once more until defeated (disallowment exceptional circumstances), but this isn't considered a rematch.

Most of the fourth dimension, however, if a Trainer is defeated, that Trainer will not exist bachelor for a rematch until certain weather take been met. When Trainers unremarkably concord to rematch, their Pokémon will have get stronger (level upwards or evolution), or they would already have acquired more Pokémon (sometimes from some other region, once the player has obtained the National Pokédex).

Types of rematch

Regular Trainers

From Generation II onwards, with the exception of Pokémon Blackness and White and X and Y, some regular Trainers found along normal routes and caves can be challenged for a rematch.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player can exchange Pokégear phone numbers with specific Trainers, allowing them to contact the player for a rematch. Note that Trainers have to be rebattled as soon as possible, otherwise the risk to do so volition disappear.

In Pokémon Aureate, Silverish, and Crystal, the number of difficulty levels and triggers are defined individually for each Trainer. Sure rematches are available merely in Gold and Silver, while others are only in Crystal. The post-obit events are triggers for new rematches:

  • Reaching a new city/town in Johto, starting with Goldenrod Urban center
  • Reaching the Lake of Rage
  • Defeating Team Rocket at Mahogany Town or Goldenrod City
  • Becoming Champion
  • Returning the Machine Part to the Kanto Power Institute

Additionally, in Aureate and Argent, the histrion will battle the strongest team available, but in Crystal, each team has to be battled in order (including fighting the initial squad again).

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Trainers' teams take 3 different difficulty levels: the get-go level is used in the commencement rematch, the second after the player has first entered the Hall of Fame, and the third subsequently the player has obtained all xvi Badges.

In Pokémon Red, Sapphire, and Emerald, the PokéNav's Trainer's Eyes or Friction match Call has similar functions to the Pokégear, keeping track of Trainers who eventually desire to re-battle the role player. Regular Trainers are eligible for rematches after obtaining the Rest Badge; once information technology is obtained, if the player is on a map with eligible Trainers, each Trainer on the map has a dissever 31% chance to need a rematch every 255 steps.[1]

In Pokémon Omega Crimson and Alpha Sapphire, the Trainer'south Heart part returns, and Trainers are ready for a rematch more than often than in Generation III; in these games, the Trainers' teams better as the actor progresses through the game, and are at their strongest later the player has entered the Hall of Fame.

Red uses the Vs. Seeker on Route 25. 3 Trainers wish to have a rematch.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, while outdoors, the player tin can use the Vs. Seeker to randomly brand nearby Trainers set up for a rematch. Certain Trainers take stronger teams, depending on how far the player is through the game, every bit long as they have defeated that Trainer'southward previous party. New Vs. Seeker parties are unlocked at the following events:

  • Obtaining the Vs. Seeker
  • Arriving in Celadon City FR LG /defeating Fantina D P /defeating Crasher Wake Pt

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, as the player progresses through the game, the Trainers' Pokémon are battled at higher levels, and will be at their strongest after the player has entered the Hall of Fame. Some Trainers may supplant their Pokémon. Pokémon Breeders in Black 2 and White 2 will re-challenge the actor upon sight (as long equally the player has left the surface area since their last battle), even if the role player had previously defeated them; yet, their teams remain the same during each battle.

In Pokémon 10 and Y, Trainers in the Battle Chateau tin be battled each time that Trainer has entered the Boxing Chateau. Only those whose rank is the same as or lower than the player'south will announced. The player tin purchase writs to have an effect on three different factors (political party levels, prize money, and Trainer arrival rate) for the balance of that twenty-four hours, although issued writs tin exist swapped out if the new 1 has the aforementioned type of effect.

Wild Pokémon from in-game events

Principal article: Listing of wild Pokémon from in-game events

Please feel gratuitous to edit this department to add together missing information and complete it.
Reason: Are effort values awarded in mandatory captures? Practice rematches also apply for wild Mythical Pokémon? Stakataka/Blacephalon in USUM: exercise they reappear if defeated?

In all games, existence defeated by a Legendary Pokémon does not cause it to disappear. In all games in which roaming Pokémon exist, fleeing from them does not crusade them to permanently disappear; the game just behaves the aforementioned every bit if they were the ones to flee.

Prior to Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, fleeing from stationary Legendary Pokémon causes the Pokémon to permanently disappear.

In Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald, if the player flees from a stationary Legendary Pokémon, it will reappear upon leaving and re-entering the room. The game informs the role player that "The <Pokémon> flew away!". If the player defeats an event exclusive Legendary/Mythical Pokémon, information technology reappears after the thespian adjacent enters the Hall of Fame.

In Pokémon Platinum, if the player defeats or flees from a stationary Legendary Pokémon, information technology reappears later on the actor adjacent enters the Hall of Fame. If the actor defeats a roaming Pokémon, information technology will reappear simply after the player has re-triggered the event which acquired it to start roaming; for example, the actor must talk to Professor Oak to cause a Legendary bird to resume roaming. If the player flees from or defeats Origin Forme Giratina in the Baloney World, information technology volition reappear in Turnback Cave in its Altered Forme, where information technology behaves in the same mode as all other stationary Legendary Pokémon.

This was extended to all stationary Pokémon (cerise Gyarados, Sudowoodo, and Snorlax) in HeartGold and SoulSilver. If Suicune is defeated or fled from, Eusine volition comment on this fact, and it will instead reappear at the Burned Tower, where information technology behaves in the same manner equally all other stationary Legendary Pokémon. If Ho-Oh HG or Lugia SS is defeated or fled from during the storyline, the Kimono Girls will comment on this fact earlier leaving; even so, the Pokémon even so conduct like whatever other stationary Pokémon.

In Pokémon Blackness and White, Reshiram B or Zekrom West must be defenseless; defeating, fleeing from or losing to the Pokémon does not crusade it to disappear, the boxing yields no experience, and the story cannot be progressed until it is caught. However, if the thespian has a full party and PC, it is possible to progress without communicable it, in which instance it instead appears at Dragonspiral Tower after defeating Ghetsis, where it behaves in the same mode as all other stationary Legendary Pokémon, except that it will still not requite any feel points.

In Pokémon X and Y, Xerneas X or Yveltal Y must be caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does not cause it to disappear, the battle yields no experience, and the story cannot be progressed until it is defenseless. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage Organisation does not become available until later the player catches it, and so it is not possible to avoid the capture even if the actor'south political party and PC are both full.

In Pokémon Omega Carmine and Alpha Sapphire, if the thespian defeats Groudon OR or Kyogre AS instead of catching them in the main story, they will reappear in the Cave of Origin after inbound the Hall of Fame. During the Delta Episode, Rayquaza must be caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does not cause it to disappear, the battle yields no experience, and the story cannot be progressed until it is caught. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage System does not become available until after the player catches Rayquaza, so it is not possible to avoid the capture even if the player'southward party and PC are both full. If the player flees from or defeats Deoxys in during the Delta Episode, it will reappear at the Dragonhark altar atop the Heaven Pillar after entering the Hall of Fame again, where it behaves in the same way as all other stationary Legendary Pokémon.

In Pokémon Dominicus and Moon, Solgaleo Southward or Lunala M must be caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to information technology does not cause information technology to disappear, the battle yields no experience, and the story cannot be progressed until it is caught. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage System does not become bachelor until after the player catches the Legendary Pokémon. If the player defeats, flees from, or loses to Tapu Koko instead of communicable it during the post-credits event, Lillie volition comment on this fact, and Tapu Koko will immediately be available to boxing once more at the Ruins of Conflict. If the histrion defeats, flees from or loses to a roaming Ultra Beast or Necrozma, it will continue to reappear in the surface area until information technology is caught (the game reassures the player that it is however in the area).

In Pokémon Ultra Dominicus and Ultra Moon, Solgaleo US or Lunala UM must be defenseless for it to disappear; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does non cause information technology to disappear and the battle yields no experience. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage System does non become available until later the player catches the Legendary Pokémon.

Trivia

  • Giovanni is the merely in-game Gym Leader that cannot be rematched an indefinite amount of times. Still, he can be battled multiple times via an event at Tohjo Falls, if the player has multiple Celebi, as well as at the Pokémon World Tournament. Koga, the other former Kanto Gym Leader, has been able to be rematched indefinitely since Generation II, where he was an Elite Four fellow member, besides as in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Become, Eevee!.
